For those businesses wishing to provide links from their website to others, this article at BitLaw is a good primer on what is and isn’t acceptable. In general, providing a link to another website is okay, given that the context of the link is straightforward. Areas to stay away from generally include:
- Presenting the link as if the information behind it is your content, or falsely indicating that you are somehow affiliated with the party providing the information.
- The context (text surrounding the link) contains factually incorrect or defamatory information.
- Aggregating many links from a site, which can be considered a “derivitave work” under copyright law.
